I know that Dave shows a counter for a fireman's carry in his book, but I am having a lot of trouble pulling it off. One of the guys that I roll with on a regular basis is a good wrestler. When he hits his fireman's he drops to one knee, drops to his side and pulls it over pretty quickly. This is especially the case in no gi. I can avoid it by not locking up with him, but want a way to set him up and catch him in it. Any suggestions or help with this would be greatly appreciated.
Respectfully,
Bill

| One suggestion is to innitiate your attack before he innitiates his. I know that sounds easy but often times people wait to see what happens and then they react. I encourage you to watch Flavio Canto or Dave Camarillo on youtube and recognize how explosive they are with their attacks. They are proactive in their attempt to get a step ahead. After I trained with Marcelo Garcia he simply told me that your #1 objective is to get a step ahead. That said and understood there certainly are counters to every attack. If you watch grappling competitions where submissions are allowed the firemans carry is not the most common attack because of it's vulnerability. One option is the triangle, another is the crucifix. If you break the firemans carry down slowly you will notice he is attcking with one arm in and one arm out. If you control the elbow of the arm the lags behind you can attack with a flying triangle or simply fall back into the submission. I would recommend Marty Morgans counter to takedowns lessons if you are looking for answers from a wrestlers approach. I hope this helps, Good luck! K

| Thank You. I will check them out. I hadn't thought about a crucifix, but now that you mention it, that makes a lot of sense. Especially because he tends to fall to his side as he goes to dump me off of the throw.
